Most lists of tutor apps are about languages or school homework. This one is for adults who want to learn a topic of their own, sorted by what you want to learn and how much of the tutoring you want the app to handle.
Learning Cadence editorial, , updated , 8 min readHow we work
If you are past school and want to learn something of your own, such as a work skill, a subject you are curious about or what you need for a decision, the useful question is not which app is smartest. It is which part of the tutoring you want the app to do for you.
A tutor does more than answer. It plans what comes next, checks whether an idea landed, explains the mistake when it did not and brings the idea back before you forget it. The apps below handle different parts of that job, so choose by the part you want done for you.

Cadence
A learning app with a personal tutor, for any topic you choose
This is our app. See the disclosure above.
Cadence brings the best ideas from books, research, expert practice and standout articles into a course shaped to your goal. You choose the topic, from a work skill to a subject you are curious about, and say where you are starting. Cadence plans an ordered 7 to 30 lesson course around it and tutors you through it. Each lesson can be read or played as audio, Spark, the tutor, gives a hint when an answer misses and brings earlier ideas back for review, and practice gives feedback on your own answers.
Best for
Turning your own starting point into one coherent course you can keep progressing through.
Not for
Anyone who needs a recognized certificate, a named instructor, or a language course with speaking practice.
Price
Free to start, with 2 new lessons a day, audio and 4 lesson voices included, and 4 new custom courses a month. Plus makes new lessons, new courses, and Ask Coach unlimited and includes 10 practice sessions a day, adds 8 more voices for 12 in total, and raises live voice practice to 15 minutes a day, for US$49.99 a year on the web, with a 7-day trial.
Study mode turns ChatGPT into a study partner. OpenAI says it can guide with questions, explain step by step, work with material you upload, create practice questions and check understanding. You decide what to study next and keep track of what you have covered.
Best for
Open-ended questions, your own documents and a study plan you manage yourself.
Not for
Someone who wants the course plan, review schedule and next step kept for them without writing the prompts.
Price
A mode inside ChatGPT. Check OpenAI's help page for the plans that include it.
Guided Learning is a Gemini mode that walks you through a topic step by step and asks you to do the work rather than handing over the answer, according to Google. It can quiz you and build study aids inside the conversation.
Best for
Working through one concept with questions, especially if you already use Google's tools.
Not for
Someone who wants a saved course, spaced reviews and a next step waiting when they return.
Price
A mode inside Gemini. Check Google's current Gemini plans for access.
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor. Khan Academy says it guides learners toward answers rather than giving them, across math, science, coding, history and the humanities, working with Khan Academy's exercises, videos and articles.
Best for
Rebuilding math, science or other academic foundations with a tutor that will not just hand over the answer.
Not for
Workplace and everyday topics outside Khan Academy's academic catalog, or learners without a US billing address.
Price
Khan Academy's learner page listed US$4 a month or US$44 a year on 31 October 2026, plus sales tax, with an adult account holder and a US billing address.
Start with your own sources, or describe a topic to find sources on the web. NotebookLM can turn the sources you choose into flashcards and quizzes. Check an explanation against the cited material.
Best for
Studying documents you already have, such as course readings, reports or a manual.
Not for
Following a ready-made course with a fixed sequence of lessons and assignments.

Duolingo offers guided exercises, goals and streaks. Its subjects include languages, math, music and chess. Those features provide ways to practice and return; they do not guarantee a sustained habit or fluency.
Best for
A free guided starting point in a supported subject or language.
Not for
Assuming an app path alone covers every real conversation or subject requirement.
Price
Core courses are free with ads and optional paid features.
Pick one idea you can check, such as leading a status update with the conclusion. Learn it, answer a question about it wrongly on purpose and see what happens. A tutor explains why that answer does not hold and lets you try again. An answer engine usually just gives you the right answer.
Then come back three days later. Does the app ask you about the idea without being prompted, or does it wait for you to remember? That one test separates a tutor from a very good search box. This is an original check you can run, not a benchmark we ran on the products.
Before you choose
When a chat assistant is enough.
If you are happy to write the prompts, ChatGPT or Gemini can act as a tutor: ask it to assess what you know, plan a curriculum, teach one lesson at a time and quiz you after each one. The cost is upkeep. You have to come back, remind it what you covered and ask for the review yourself.
Choose an app built as a tutor when you want those steps to happen without managing them, or when you know you will not keep the routine going on your own.
Before you choose
If you want a tutor for any topic, try Cadence.
Cadence, our app, builds a course around the topic you choose and tutors you through it on iPhone and Android. When an answer misses, its tutor explains why right there and lets you try again. Short reviews bring earlier ideas back before they fade, each new lesson takes what you got right and what slipped into account, and your next step is waiting when you open the app.
It is not a human tutor or a credential. For accredited exam preparation, hands-on technique or a language, the specialist options above fit better.
Put it into practice
Start it today, one lesson at a time.
Cadence builds a course around your goal, with lessons, practice and saved progress. Learn at your own pace. Cadence is our app.
It depends on what you want to learn. For any topic you choose, with the plan, checks and reviews handled for you, try Cadence, our app. For open questions you steer yourself, ChatGPT Study mode or Gemini Guided Learning. For school math and science, Khanmigo. For documents you already have, NotebookLM. For a language, Duolingo.
Is ChatGPT a good tutor?
It can be, if you manage the session. OpenAI says Study mode guides with questions and can check understanding. What it does not do by default is keep a course plan, schedule reviews or have your next step ready when you return.
Can a tutor app teach any subject?
Most can explain almost anything, but they differ in what they plan and check. Cadence builds a course around a topic you type, Khanmigo works from Khan Academy's academic library and NotebookLM works from sources you choose, including documents you add and web sources you discover. Hands-on skills still need a person watching.
Are tutor apps accurate?
Not always. Explanations from any of these apps can be wrong or incomplete. Check important claims against reliable sources, especially medical, legal and financial information.
